Funeral Services
We are very sorry for your loss. The masjid will take care of the ghusl, the kafan and the janazah prayer, and help you with the paperwork and the burial. You do not need to know what to do — that is what we are here for.
What to do first
Call us
On 01204 524200, whatever the time. Tell us where the person has passed away — at home, in hospital, or in a care home. We take it from there.
Get the medical certificate
The doctor or hospital issues a medical certificate of cause of death. If the death was sudden or unexpected the coroner may need to be involved, which can add time. We will explain either way.
Register the death
Within five days, at Bolton Register Office. They will give you the green form, which the burial cannot go ahead without. Bring it to us or tell us and we will collect it.
We arrange the rest
Transport, ghusl, kafan, the janazah prayer and the burial. We will agree a time with you and let the congregation know so the community can attend.
What we provide
Washing of the deceased, performed by trained members of our community — men for men, women for women.
The shrouding, with the cloth provided by the masjid.
Usually held immediately after one of the daily jama’ah prayers, so the congregation can join.
From the place of death to the masjid, and on to the cemetery.
The registrar, the green form, and liaison with the cemetery and, where needed, the coroner.
If the burial is to be abroad, we can help arrange it. Tell us early, as it takes longer.
Bereavement support and counselling for the family, for as long as it is needed.
Please say so when you call. No family is turned away, and nobody will be made to feel uncomfortable about asking. The masjid has a fund for exactly this.

Questions families ask
As soon as the paperwork allows — usually within a day or two. Islamically the burial should not be delayed without reason, and we will do everything we can to avoid delay. If the coroner is involved it can take longer, and that is outside anyone’s control.
Yes. There is space in the women’s section for the janazah prayer. Practice at the graveside varies between families and scholars — speak to us and we will accommodate what you are comfortable with.
There are unavoidable third-party costs — the cemetery’s burial fee and, if needed, transport. The masjid’s own services are provided to the community. We will be clear about every figure before you commit to anything, and if cost is a difficulty, say so.
Yes. Repatriation needs embalming, a coffin, consular paperwork and an airline booking, so it takes several days longer and costs considerably more. Tell us as early as you can.
It makes no difference. We help any Muslim family in Bolton and the surrounding area, whether or not they ever came to this masjid.
Yes, and you are encouraged to. We can tell you the plot number and the cemetery’s opening hours, and there is a du’a to recite on arrival that we are happy to write out for you.

Afterwards
Grief does not end with the burial. The masjid offers confidential counselling and bereavement support to families, and there is no time limit on it.
