Drafted for the masjid. It records what has actually been built and tested so far, and is deliberately honest about what has not. It should be updated once the site has been tested with assistive technology and by disabled users.

Getting into the masjid

The masjid is at 100–110 Grecian Crescent, Bolton BL3 6QU.

  • Separate prayer areas for men and women, both step-free
  • Chairs are available for anyone who cannot pray on the floor — please ask, and do not feel you need to explain

To be confirmed: accessible parking, hearing loop, whether the hall and madrassah rooms are step-free, and accessible toilet locations.

This website

We want this site to work for everyone, including people using a screen reader, navigating by keyboard, using speech recognition, or magnifying the page.

We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 level AA. We have not yet had the site independently audited, so we do not claim to meet it. The sections below set out exactly where we are.

What we have done

These have been built in and checked:

  • Colour contrast. Every page has been checked programmatically for text contrast against its background. Body text clears 4.5:1 and most clears 7:1. Our gold is used as a background colour and never as small text on white, because it fails contrast there.
  • Motion can be switched off. If your device is set to reduce motion, every animation, slider, parallax effect and count-up stops. The funeral page carries no motion at all, for anyone.
  • Keyboard use. Every page starts with a "Skip to content" link, and focus outlines are visible rather than removed.
  • Structure. Pages use real headings, landmarks and lists, so a screen reader can navigate by them.
  • Images. Every meaningful image has alternative text; decorative ones are hidden from screen readers.
  • Forms. Every field has a visible label attached to it, not just placeholder text.
  • Text size. The page reflows without horizontal scrolling down to 375px wide, and text can be enlarged.
  • Arabic. Qur'anic and du'a text is marked as Arabic and right-to-left, so a screen reader reads it correctly.
  • No tracking. No analytics or advertising scripts, and the contact page map is deliberately left out.

Known problems

We would rather list these than pretend they are not there.

  • The prayer timetable is a wide table. On a phone it scrolls sideways. It is a real table with proper headers, so a screen reader can read it, but it is not comfortable on a small screen. Printing the page gives a cleaner version.
  • Downloadable documents. The youth club registration pack and the timetable PDF have not been checked for accessibility. If you need either in a different format, ask and we will provide one.
  • Fonts and icons load from other servers. On a slow connection, icons may appear late.
  • No map on the contact page. Left out on purpose until a cookie notice is in place. There is a text address and a link out instead.
  • Third-party payment pages. When you donate, part of the process happens on our payment provider's pages, which we do not control.

Not yet tested

Being straightforward about this matters more than sounding confident:

  • The site has not been tested with a screen reader such as NVDA, JAWS or VoiceOver
  • It has not been tested by disabled users
  • It has not had an independent accessibility audit
  • It has not been tested with speech recognition software
  • Contrast has been checked automatically, which catches most problems but not all of them

Automated checks typically find about a third of accessibility problems. The rest need a person. We would recommend the trustees arrange testing before launch.
